The Festival of Unleavened Bread in the Old Testament came to be associated with Passover and how God had delivered his people from their slavery in Egypt. Jesus fulfills this meaning of the festival by delivering his people from their slavery to sin. He said in John 8:34, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” Then He added in verse 36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

When God delivered his people from Egypt, it happened so quickly that the people did not have the time to make their bread for the trip as they usually would by using leaven. Instead, they used unleavened bread. Jesus fulfills this aspect of the Festival of Unleavened Bread by being the unleavened bread of God that came down from heaven and provides for his people “the bread of life.” Jesus Himself said this was true when He picked up the unleavened bread of the Passover meal and said, “This is my body given for you.” Also, the New Testament makes it clear that Jesus was without sin, and since leaven in the Bible can represent sin, then the unleavened bread of the festival also represents Jesus for this reason.

In John 6:35, 48-51 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Yes, Jesus fulfills the Old Testament Festival of Unleavened Bread since He is God’s sinless, unleavened bread from heaven who provides for his people “the bread of life.” The Scriptures listed below center on how Jesus fulfills this meaning of the festival rather than on how He also delivers us from our slavery to sin, the other major theme of it. For this theme, see “A Messianic Passover Service and as God Saved His People from Slavery in Egypt, Jesus Saves His People from Slavery to Sin” in this section of “Old Testament Festival and Messianic Services.”
